Chapter 5

Nikki had been through some hard days at work through the course of her career. She knew what it was like to be scared, to be threatened, to be so tired she couldn’t quite care about fear or threats. But stepping into the sunshine, her hand in Brett’s, the reason for the abrupt end to the rehearsal faded. Almost as if it hadn’t happened at all.

Her feet felt lighter, her heart too. “Thank you,” she said. “You were rock solid, absolutely perfect in there.”

“You’re welcome.”

He opened his mouth and she held up her hand. “I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Give me some credit.” His lips tilted into that sexy grin. “I was going to tell you about our date.”

“We don’t have a date until the day after tomorrow.”

“Call it an outing then. You haven’t eaten since breakfast.”

“Now?” Was he kidding? She wasn’t dressed for any kind of a date or outing. She felt tired and gross and—

“If you’d rather, we can just call it lunch.”

She laughed, surprising herself. “What did you set up?”

“Well if you’re up for a walk, this Carolina boyfriend booked a picnic in the park, to be served with a side of history.”

“Sounds like fun,” she said, intrigued.

“Already hooked?” He bobbed his eyebrows. “That bodes well.”

He pointed out various landmarks, even mentioned a ghost or two as they passed cemeteries. She was listening, but it was hard to focus on the past when the present company was so charming. This was just the type of thing she needed to wind down.

He paused at the next corner and pulled her out of the flow of tourists walking by. “Okay, I’m not sure what kind of a shopper you are, but I have a request.”

“Name it.” She was feeling remarkably agreeable.

“We’re going to walk through the market, stop at one booth to pick up the picnic, and then we’re leaving.”

“This is a ‘do not pass go, do not collect two hundred dollars’ kind of thing?

“Exactly. If you want to shop, I can set that up with Hank and Sadie for another day.”

The man was definitely a charmer. “I’ll tell you a secret.” She leaned in close. “Sadie and I have already torn up this place. Twice.”

“Thank you for supporting the economy.”

He held such a serious expression, she burst into giggles. Giggles. After what had just happened. The man was a miracle worker.

She nudged him when the crosswalk light flashed green. “Lead the way.”

The market always tempted with so many items to explore, but she kept her word and didn’t stop. He led her directly to a well-organized booth selling products from the Ellington Plantation. She’d learned on a previous visit to the area that the several branches of the extensive family owned and managed properties around town.

The woman tending the register at the booth beamed at Brett as she handed him a picnic hamper. Nikki would’ve offered to pay, but it seemed he’d handled that detail too. Exiting the market, he turned toward the park at the end of the peninsula.
